...My first home...

Cela m'atriste...

I feel there is a certain loss of authenticity; the stories and works of arts are presented in such sterile and controlled environments. I even question whether the brush strokes you see are genuine. It all feels so removed from the creators of these works and stories. My mother expresses her saddness at how neither Van Gogh nor Anne Frank will ever know the success they have reached. They have powerful works that have moved hundreds of people across the globe, gaining international recognition...yet, she wonders for what. Because those at the source died before any such glory was had. So, she asks, what was the point if they don't know? But perhaps that's the point - if they hadn't of died, would the story be quite the same...

...réflexion enneigée...

I watch the snowflakes outside; fluttering in space as if they were dancing... there is something remarkably peaceful about snow falling.

However, for a brief instant one question does cross my mind... i can't help but wonder whether when it snows a lot, does that lead to less crime and break-ins...?

...a touch of colour...

Nothing like a touch of colour in what could have possibly felt like another bleak day...but with a bright blue sky as a backdrop, these random bursts of colour brighten the picture, brighten the day... Funny how such a small detail can lift your mood!

...parlez-vous franglais?

i'm bilingual...i lived in two homes with two different languages...today, je connais deux langues really well mais aucune à 100%. And the pressures and expectations one puts on themselves.

This entry may then seem utterly incoherent and ludicrous to some. However, initially I had aspired to have two seperate blogs. One in english. One in french. In some 'logic' that one language could not cohabit with the other in the same blog.

...new year, new beginnings...

A new year. A new 'beginning'. A new determination with a renewed hope and drive. A new resolution. (sometimes a new disappointment). A new diary...so much 'newness'...as if we are given a fresh start. This one day a year, we feel as though we are entitled to a whole new blank page to fill as we wish.
I must say, I was rather surprised at just how therapeutic it felt to open my new 2010 diary; as if fresh from the printers the pages gleaming blank, free of business and loudness, free of comments, memos, notes in black, blue, red and purple ink...the noise my 'old' diary excudes is incredible. You can actually here the train-train du quotidien - that 'stress' that our society so kindly seeps into our daily lives. However it's a bit of a treasure as it harbours such a complete histoire of me: the romances, the appointments, the trips, the jobs and the projects of the past 18 months - add also several doodles, stickers and newspaper cuttings. So much clutter really... No! My new diary is currently free of all comments, marks and stickers; the leather sturdy and smooth and the edges unruffled and undamaged. It's ready to welcome what this new year brings...i just hope it's gleaminess last's more than a week....

Capturing a state of mind...

A two hour car journey, heading to Germany...a captured moment reflecting a current sentiment; finally a breakthrough of clarity through this jumbled confusion I have been experiencing... through transit emerges lots of questions, reflections, doubts... and sometimes clarity.

Glamorous solitude...

Inspiration always seems to hit at the most awkward of times...such as on a lone winter night's walk home from town...where the passing traffic, the distant rush of trains and the swift sway of tree branches invites the mind to drift, memories to flood and reflection to flourish. And, of course, where paper and pen are absent...

Another Friday night spent alone...not out of lack of trying to find enthusiasts to join me in an evening of vernissages and emerging art creations throughout the city. I can't complain as I did bump into one or two people I knew... but you know, the kind of situation where you know them through someone else so you don't quite feel justified to call them 'your friend' and they hardly consider asking you to join them for a drink... after all, you're 'so-and-so's' friend, not theirs. Anyhow... venturing in my own company in and out of galleries and artistic spaces, I realised the following:
I have friends in New York, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, Canada, London, Newscastle, Wales and Paris. All very glamorous indeed... But is it really? As while I have friends in these fabulous locations, how many do I have here? I remain with few to none at home... or the place I identify as home.

The glamour of travelling and living abroad soon wears when you suddenly realise that it is quite a solitary thing. This thought reminded me of what a guest artist mentioned in a class of mine;
she was talking about the concept of mobility; always moving. And while few agreed – I really related to her comment that the excitement of travel and move into the unknown soon diffuses into a certain sentiment of solitude. She was discussing how travel is in fact a very solitary experience, and the glamour and ideology of it can soon become lonesome. After all, you're always leaving someone, somewhere, something behind... and some things are irreplacable.

Transitional excuses

It's not because nothing has been written that all has been forgotten....i suppose, and not meaning to be ironic, one could say I have been transiting. From a job that I very much disliked...to an unknown...from one country to another; from new relationships and old friendships; pasts, presents and futures; shifting mind-frames and a persistent and bloody insecurity that what I write will truly not interest anybody.
But how will I know if I don't start publishing online and making it accessible to an audience to critic, comment or even - and doubtful but always hopeful - applaud. So....writing to come. Even (and most likely always) in transit...from here and there...
